Illegal dumping is a violation that not only negatively affects the community it takes place in, but it also can result in perpetrators facing fines or arrest.
An example of an illegal dumper facing criminal penalties took place recently when a Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) Enforcement Division Special Investigator assisted in the apprehension of an illegal dumper who was caught in the act. The officer observed an individual dumping items on the right-of-way and safely delayed the dumper until Miami-Dade Police officers could arrive and make an arrest.
In another instance, an illegal dumper was fined for his actions as a result of evidence found at an illegal dumping site. A large pile of illegally dumped trash composed of construction and demolition debris was found on the public right-of-way. A DSWM Enforcement Division Special Investigator sifted through the pile and found a credit card receipt for a meal purchased at a local restaurant. The investigator visited the restaurant and was able to identify the credit card owner. The illegal dumper was fined.
Enforcement actions like these and the continued work by the Department’s Trash Division to collect illegally dumped trash ensure that the aesthetic and environmental well-being of our service area is maintained.
