Pet Adoptions

Adopt a Pet Program allows residents to adopt animals that have been impounded and held for three days. All adoptions are first-come first-serve.

You can start your search for a new pet online at PetHarbor but you must come into the Animal Shelter, visit the Hope Express (mobile adoption vehicle), Petco Adoption Center or at other off-site events.

Shelters dogs and cats make good pets and reward their rescuers with lifelong loyalty and affection. Find your furry friend today!

  • Regulation & Compliance

    Rabies Law

All dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months old must be vaccinated against rabies, and must be vaccinated 12 months after that.

    Animal Cruelty Law

Animal cruelty is defined as depriving an animal of food, water, shelter or veterinary care. Hoarding animals (keeping too many in one location), torturing, maiming (impairing) or killing animals is also animal cruelty.
  • What do I need to bring to the Animal Shelter to adopt a pet?

On the day of adoption, you need to bring the following information to the Pet Adoption and Protection Center:

    • A copy of your driver license or valid state picture ID
    • Proof of current address
    • A signed spay or neuter agreement is required if the pet cannot be sterilized at the time of his or her adoption in addition to a $50 refundable deposit upon proof of pet’s sterilization.
    • A collar and leash for a dog or puppy (if you don’t have one, you can purchase both at the Pet Adoption and Protection Center).

  • What if I have to return my pet?

Adopted animals may be returned to the Pet Adoption and Protection Center for a refund or exchange within 30 days if:

    • The animal has a medical condition that was not disclosed at the time of adoption and the condition is confirmed in a written evaluation by a certified veterinarian.
    • An animal dies within 30 days of adoption and is returned to Animal Services deceased.

If the pet is returned for any other reason by its owner, the animal is considered a surrendered pet and the owner is not entitled to a refund or exchange.

  • What are my responsibilities as a new pet owner?

Adopting a shelter animal is a rewarding responsibility:

    • Once an animal is adopted, the new owner assumes medical and financial responsibility for the animal.
    • If after adoption the animal becomes ill, the owner is responsible for its care. Animal Services will not provide medical care in this situation.
    • For more details on adopter responsibilities, refer to the adoption contract.
