Register to Vote

Registering to vote is a right. It is available to all persons over the age of 18 and are United States citizens who meet the requirements. Read the Voter Information Guide. (Español) (Kreyòl)

Who can register to vote

  • Anyone who is least 18 years old, though you can pre-register at 16.
  • Any citizen of the United States. You can register right after you've become a citizen.
  • You must live in Miami-Dade County to register to vote in Miami-Dade County. There is no length of time you must live in the county as long as you register at least 29 days before the election in which you wish to vote.

The following people cannot register to vote:

  • Anyone who is not a U.S. citizen.
  • Anyone who has been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting, and has not had their right to vote restored.
  • Anyone convicted of a felony who has not had their civil rights restored.
  • Voter Registration Application

    Prospective voters who meet all the eligibility requirements can register to vote online. You may also submit a Voter Registration Application (Español) (Kreyòl) by mail. Please print, sign it and mail it to the Elections Department. The application must contain the applicant's original signature.

    When you register to vote, it is required by law that you include a residential address. A P.O. Box or business address is only allowed as a mailing address, not as a home address.

    A family member may drop off your application at the Elections Department or the Elections Branch office downtown with a copy of the necessary ID.

  • Voter Information Card

    A Voter Information Card includes all identifying information, as well as the precinct number, location, applicable voting districts, and other elections-related information.

    A voter may receive a replacement Voter Information Card by providing a signed, written request with their name and date of birth to the Elections Department. Upon verification of registration, Miami-Dade County will issue the voter a duplicate card without charge. It should arrive within one week.

    Voters may receive a new Voter Information Card in the mail when:

    • A change of name, address or party affiliation is submitted.
    • A temporary or permanent polling place change is made.
    • During a countywide mailer to voters from the Elections Department.

  • Voter Registration Changes

    Address Changes: Miami-Dade and Florida Voters

    Miami-Dade County registered voters can change their address through our Voter Information page, or by email, telephone, fax, mail or in person. You will need to provide us with your full name, the new address, and your date of birth. Changes submitted on a Voter Registration Application (Español) (Kreyòl) must include the voter's signature.

    If you've moved to Miami-Dade County from another Florida county, you'll need to register with us to vote in Miami-Dade.


    Political party or name changes

    Miami-Dade County registered voter can request political party and name changes online. Party changes can also be made by submitting a signed written notice that contains the date of birth by email, fax, or by mail. A change to a voter's party affiliation must be made 29 days before an election, if the election is for the purpose of nominating a political party nominee.

    Name changes can be made by submitting a signed written notice that contains the date of birth or voter registration number by email, fax, or by mail.


    Signature Updates

    Miami-Dade County registered voters can request a signature update through our Voter Information page or complete a Voter Registration Application (Español) (Kreyòl). Changes submitted on a Voter Registration Application must contain the voter's original signature.

    It is important to update your signature as it may change over the years. If you are unable to sign your name due to a disability, a mark may be used such as an "X." This ensures that any petition or vote-by-mail ballot signed by you will match the signature that we have on file provided you continue to use the same mark. In case you decide to vote by mail, be sure to submit your signature update at least 15 days prior to the election in which you wish to vote.

  • Third-Party Registration

    Before soliciting or collecting voter registration applications, third-party voter registration organizations must now register with the state. For more information, visit the Florida Division of Elections website.

  • Other Voter Registration Agencies

    There are many authorized voter registration agencies where you can register in person. Once you complete the application, give it the agency official. The agency will mail or have the application delivered to the Miami-Dade Elections Department.

  • Public Records Exemption

    Eligible public officials may request to have address information on their voter registration record exempt from public view.
