Register to Vote

Prospective voters who meet all the eligibility requirements can register to vote online, by mail or in person at the Miami-Dade Elections Department.

There are also many authorized voter registration agencies where you can register in person.

When you register to vote, an actual residence address is required by law. P.O. Box or business address are only accepted as a mailing address, and not as a residential address.

A family member may drop off a completed application with a copy of the necessary ID at the Elections Department or Elections Branch office downtown.

Registration deadlines

Residents can register to vote anytime throughout the year. Registration closes 29 days prior to an upcoming election. Follow the instructions online.

  • Eligibility & Requirements

    Who can register to vote

    • You must be at least 18-years-old (pre-registration begins at 16).
    • You must be a citizen of the United States. There is no length of time that you must be a citizen before registering to vote.
    • You must reside in Miami-Dade County. There is no length of time that you must live in the county before registering to vote as long as you register at least 29 days before the election in which you wish to vote.

    The following people cannot register to vote:

    • Anyone who is not a U.S. citizen.
    • Anyone who has been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting, and has not had their right to vote restored.
    • Anyone convicted of a felony who has not had their civil rights restored.
  • Voter Registration Application

    Prospective voters who meet all the eligibility requirements can register using the Voter Registration Application, (in Spanish), (in Creole ). Print, sign and mail the form to the Surpervisor of Elections.

  • Voter Information Card

    A Voter Information Card includes all identifying information, as well as the precinct number, location, applicable voting districts, and other elections-related information.

    A voter may receive a replacement Voter Information Card by providing a signed, written request with the name and date of birth th the Supervisor of Elections Registrations Division.

    Upon verification of registration, Miami-Dade County will issue the voter a duplicate card without charge; it should arrive within five days.

    Voters may receive a new Voter Information Card in the mail when:

    • A change of name, address, or party affiliation is submitted.
    • A temporary or permanent polling place change is made.
    • During a countywide mailer to voters from the Elections Department.

  • Voter Registration Changes

    Moving within Miami-Dade County or from another Florida county

    Miami-Dade County registered voters can request address changes online, by email, telephone, fax, mail or in person.

    You will need to provide your full name, new residence and mailing address, date of birth and, as an option, telephone number.

    Voters moving to Miami-Dade from another Florida county can also submit by mail a Voter Registration Application to the Miami-Dade Elections Department.

    Political party or name changes

    Party changes can also be made by submitting a signed written notice that contains the date of birth. A change to a voter's party affiliation must be made 29 days before an election, if the election is for the purpose of nominating a political party nominee.

    Name changes can be made by submitting a signed written notice that contains the date of birth or voter registration number.

    Signature updates

    Miami-Dade County registered voters can request a signature update online. Check off the "signature update" box at the top of the application. It is important to update your signature as it may change over the years.

    If you are unable to sign your name due to a disability, a mark may be used such as an "X." This ensures that any petition or vote by mail ballot signed by you will match the signature that we have on file provided you continue to use the same mark. In case you decide to vote by mail, be sure to submit your signature update at least 15 days prior to the election in which you wish to vote.

  • Other Voter Registration Agencies

    There are also many authorized voter registration agencies where you can register in person. You may complete the voter registration application and give it to the agency official. The agency will mail or have the application delivered to the Miami-Dade Elections Department. 

    Once your application is processed, you will be mailed a Voter Information Card if you have met all the requirements to become a registered voter in the State of Florida.
