When buying real estate property, do not assume property taxes will remain the same. A change in ownership may reset the assessed value of the property to full market value, which could result in higher property taxes. Please use our Tax Estimator to approximate your new property taxes.

The Property Appraiser does not send tax bills and does not set or collect taxes. Please visit the Tax Collector's website directly for additional information.

The Homestead Exemption saves property owners thousands of dollars each year. Do not jeopardize your Homestead by renting your property.

Before buying real estate property, be aware that non-ad valorem assessments may have a significant impact on your property tax bill.

Qualifying, Renewing or Canceling the Senior Exemption

Qualifying for Senior Exemption

  • Applicant must have homestead exemption
  • Be 65 or older as of January 1
  • And the Adjusted Gross Income for all persons living in the house (even those not an owner) must be less than statutory limits

Applications DR-501SC are due by March 1st.

Renewing Senior Exemption

The  Senior Citizen’s Exemption is automatically renewed each year. If you are still eligible for these exemption(s), you DO NOT NEED to take any further action, just keep the Automatic Renewal Receipt our office mails every year with the updated Adjusted Household for your records.

Canceling Senior Exemption

Florida Law prescribes that is the duty of the owner of any property to notify the Property Appraiser promptly, whenever the use of the property or the status or condition of the owner changes, so as to change the exempt status of the property.

If any owner fails to so notify the Property Appraiser and the Property Appraiser determines that for any year within the prior ten years the owner was not entitled to receive such exemption, the property shall be subject to the taxes exempted as a result of such failure, plus 15 percent interest per annum, and a penalty of 50 percent of the taxes exempted. Reference Sec.196.131 and 196.161.
