(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- The Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide Bureau is conducting a death investigation as a result of two planes colliding in midair.
According to investigators, several 911 calls were received in reference to an explosion due to a possible plane crash. With the assistance of the Florida Highway Patrol, Miccosukee Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Everglades National Park Rangers, first responders were able to respond and locate the crash site. Local airboat businesses assisted Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units to reach the crash site and confirm that two planes were involved. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel were able to determine that three people were deceased on the scene. The preliminary information revealed that both planes were training flight students. One of the aircrafts had two people onboard, leading investigators to believe that the second aircraft also had two. Therefore, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue continued the search for a possible forth person until nightfall. Due to low visibility, the search was suspended and will resume upon sunrise. The crash will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
