Organized Fuel Theft Ring

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

As part of our continued effort to keep our community safe and to reduce financial crimes, the Miami-Dade Police Department Economic Crimes Bureau, in collaboration with the Medley Police Department and the United States Secret Service, conducted operation "Fill Er Up."  During the investigation, detectives identified a commercial truck yard, located at 12321 N.W. 154 Street.  This site was operating in the black market, storing and selling stolen and fraudulently obtained fuel.  This scheme was facilitated by the use of fraudulent credit cards at gas stations to steal fuel.  The fuel was pumped into concealed fuel bladders retrofitted inside vans and trucks, capable of storing and transporting hundreds of gallons of fuel.  Once at the truck yard, the fuel would be transferred to larger containers for illegal sale. The total amount of fuel transported and sold daily was in excess of 10,000 gallons.

The operation yielded 13 felony arrests, 12 confiscated vehicles (10 containing fuel bladders), over 156 stolen credit cards, and counterfeit credit card encoding paraphernalia.
