Arrest Made in Fentanyl Related Death

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

On Friday, February 8, 2019, Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide detectives in conjunction with Narcotics detectives arrested Karl Schmidt and David Cash, charging them with 1st  Degree Murder.

According to investigators, on December 11, 2018, the victim, Daniel Calle, asked his friend Karl Schmidt to purchase heroin. After purchasing the heroin, Schmidt went back to Mr. Calle's residence where they both consumed the narcotic. Schmidt awoke hours later and found Mr. Calle unresponsive and cold to the touch. He then fled the scene, never alerting emergency personnel. The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s autopsy determined that Mr. Calle’s death was due to acute Fentanyl and cocaine toxicity. Working together with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office, investigators obtained arrest warrants for Schmidt and David Cash. Through investigative means, detectives learned that Karl Schmidt was in the Palm Beach County area.  With the assistance of the Palm Beach Sherriff’s Office, he was taken into custody. “The Miami-Dade Police have done a masterful job of tracking down those individuals whose desire for a handful of dollars from the sale of fentanyl and heroin leaves them immune to the death and destruction that these drugs bring,” said State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. Schmidt provided a statement of his involvement to investigators, stating that he purchased the narcotics from his friend, David Cash. Investigators located David Cash, who is currently incarcerated. He provided a statement of his involvement of the sale of heroin.  Both were charged accordingly.  “This case serves as an example of our commitment to combat the Opioid crisis which continues to affect our community.  We will continue to dedicate resources, and work together with our law enforcement partners, to hold the individuals who profit from these terrible drugs accountable for the their actions.”, said Juan J. Perez, Director.
