Police Involved Shooting

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a police involved shooting involving a Miami-Dade police officer.

According to investigators, Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction.  However, the vehicle did not stop and fled the immediate area.  The officers lost visual of the vehicle and later spotted it unoccupied, parked at an apartment complex, located at 13010 Alexandria Drive.  The officers conducted a surveillance of the vehicle, and within minutes, three males approached the vehicle and attempted to remove the license plate. The officers approached and after a brief encounter with the three individuals, subject #1 was shot by one of the officers.  The other two subjects ran from the scene and were apprehended a short time later.  Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported subject #1 to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.  The subject is expected to survive his injuries.  No officers were injured.  At this time, the FDLE investigation continues.  Information received thus far indicates that a screwdriver was recovered as evidence from the scene of the encounter.  The involved officer's statement to investigators is pending.  He has served with the Miami-Dade Police Department for eight years.
