Police Involved Shooting

Officer wounded by an assault rifle.

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a police shooting that involved Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) officers, which resulted in the shooting death of the subject and an officer wounded by gunfire.

According to investigators, MDPD, Northwest District detectives were conducting an ongoing investigation that involved a previous domestic related abduction.  As detectives searched the area, they observed the subject vehicle and attempted to stop it.  The subject refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.  As the subject approached the area of West 65 Street and West 2 Avenue, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed.  He then stepped out of the vehicle with an assault rifle and opened fire at the detectives.  Detectives returned fire and during the exchange, one of the detectives was wounded.  The subject fled the area on foot and a perimeter was immediately established.  The detective was airlifted to JMH Ryder Trauma Center, where he was treated and subsequently released.  With the assistance of multiple police agencies, a search of the area was conducted and the subject was located by members of the MDPD, Special Response Team.  A confrontation ensued, shots were fired and the subject was fatally wounded.  No other officers were injured during the incident.
