The Poll Worker Post

Supervisor of Elections' Message

Dear Proud Poll Worker,

It is so hard to believe that 2023 is almost behind us. I hope you were able to spend some time during the holiday season relaxing and having a little fun with family and friends. The Elections Department staff were able to take a (short) break and recharge for the year ahead. So, we are ready.

Before you know it, we will be reaching out to schedule you for training for the March 19, 2024, Presidential Primary Election. We hope you will join the team for this election, and as a reminder, the sooner you complete training, the sooner we place you in your assigned precinct(s). I know many of you really enjoy working in your longtime location with a group you have built relationships with. So, I encourage you to always take the training as soon as possible. This helps with your placement!

What is also important to note about the March election is that it is a Republican Only Presidential Preference Primary Election. This means only Miami-Dade’s nearly 435,000 Republicans are eligible in this election.

The Florida Democratic Party submitted Joseph R. Biden Jr as their only candidate, therefore Democrats are not selecting a presidential nominee. On the other hand, the Republican Party of Florida provided seven (7) names for its voters to select their preferred candidate, therefore Republicans are eligible in this election to select their presidential nominee.

Reminder that Florida is a closed primary election state. Only voters who are registered members of a political party may vote for the respective party candidate or nominees for an office in a primary election including a presidential preference primary election.

The small exceptions for this election are that all voters in the cities of South Miami and Surfside will vote due to local races or questions.

Also, important to know is that as of January 1, 2023, all vote by mail requests expired. So, if you or anybody you know wants the convenience of voting by mail and has not renewed in 2023, a new request must be submitted. Do this as soon as possible. It will only take 3 minutes using the link in Vote-By-Mail Renewal section of this publication.

Lastly, in the August edition of the Poll Worker Post, we advised you that “reprecincting” had concluded, meaning that precinct lines were updated. You will learn more about this in training, but we have conducted eight (8) city elections with the new precincts, and all have gone well so far.

One of the huge benefits is the elimination of “split” precincts. So, most polling locations will have fewer precincts to manage. I know you are happy about that!

However, this also means that some voters will have a new polling location moving forward. Most voters have no change at all. But this is something to be aware of when working the polls in upcoming elections. While there is modest voter impact and voter turnout is expected to be light in the March 19th Presidential Preference Primary Election, some voters might need to be redirected while they get used to the changes.

But in the end, this is sure to make your Election Day polling place run smoother than ever. This is one more way we set ourselves up for success in 2024!

Until the next edition, I wish you a very Happy New Year! I am so excited for 2024. I hope you are too. Together, we have a fun year ahead. We are ready! Thank you for everything you do for the voters of Miami-Dade County. We could not build trust and confidence without you.
