Juvenile Diversion Programs

Juvenile Diversion Programs can be an alternative to formal court involvement and supervision.

  • Juvenile Alternative Services Sanctions (JASS)

    The JASS diversion program provides the following services if you have committed a first-time nonviolent misdemeanor:

    • An evidence-based assessment that provides the identification of service needs
    • Referrals to:
      • Psycho-educational groups
      • Substance abuse counseling
      • Individual and family counseling
    • Case Management
    • Victim and offender mediation
    • Restitution coordination
    • Community service
    • Monitoring educational goals

    You will participate in the program for approximately 90 to 120 days.

    If you need transportation, a Transit Pass may be given to you free of charge (restrictions apply).

    If you fail to complete the program, your case will be referred to the State Attorney's Office for judicial review.

    Eligibility:

    • You must be 17 years of age or under.
    • You must be a first-time nonviolent misdemeanor offender.
    • All cases are approved by the State Attorney
  • Juvenile Delinquency Alternative Program (J-DAP)

    The JDAP diversion program gives at-risk youth an alternative to formal court involvement and management.

    You and your family can get help with issues in school performance, and family or substance abuse.

    The JDAP diversion program provides the following services:

    • An evidence-based assessment that provides the basis for treatment services
    • Referrals to:
      • Psycho-educational groups
      • Substance abuse counseling
      • Individual and family counseling
    • Case Management
    • Victim and offender meditation
    • Restitution coordination
    • Community service
    • Monitoring educational goals

    You will attend the program for approximately 3-6 months.

    If you need transportation, a Transit Pass may be given to you free of charge (restrictions apply).

    If you fail to complete the program, your case will be referred to the State Attorney's Office for judicial review.

    Eligibility:

    • You must be 17 years of age or under
    • You must live in Miami-Dade County

    The program only covers:

    • First-time felonies (restrctions apply)
    • First-time violent misdemeanors
    • All cases are approved by the State Attorney
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) Monitoring

    The GPS monitoring program is for youth who have committed a nonviolent crime and are pending trial.

    As an alternative to being held in a detention center, you will wear an electronic ankle monitoring device. You must wear the device until a judge orders removal.

    Eligibility:

    • You must be 18 years of age and under.
    • All cases are approved by the State Attorney.

    If you do not complete the program, the Juvenile Services Department will submit a report to the court and a judge will decide if you continue the program or if you will be placed in a detention center.

    If you do not show up in court, you can be placed in a detention center.

    Benefits:

    • Wait for your court hearing at home rather than in a detention center.
    • Receive services such as substance abuse or mental health help through referrals.

    Excluded offenses include:

    • Violent felony offenses
    • Firearm-related offenses
